How to clean your baby’s mouth

Before the growth of teeth, a baby’s mouth still has to be cleaned in order to prevent mouth odor.

The three easy steps for cleaning a baby’s mouth and teeth includes:

  • The baby should be made to lie on the caregiver’s lap and his mouth and his face should be lifted close to the caregivers chest to enable the caregiver have a clear view of the baby’s mouth.
  • Using a moist towel, the caregiver should carefully and gently rub the upper and lower gum and tongue.
  • If the baby’s teeth are already grown, it is advisable to use a soft brittle infant sized toothbrush and a pea sized amount of toothpaste on the teeth of the baby.


  • Take your baby to the dentist before he is one year old, to ensure an appropriate dental health.
  • Fluoride should be added to the baby’s diet, when the baby starts developing teeth, the fluoride could be added to the tap water in the house. Also, the use of toothpaste with fluoride is advised.
  • Brush your baby’s teeth at least twice a day.
  • Brush the baby’s teeth for him until he can takeover and when he does, supervise him till he can be trusted to brush himself.
  • Visit the dentist at least twice a year, once every 6 months.
  • Take time to brush and clean your baby’s tongue to avoid bad breath.
  • Ensure the baby doesn’t swallow too much toothpaste.
  • Ensure your baby takes less sugary foods and candy.
